SOUTH AFRICA IN RECESSION AFTERSHOCK ECONOMIC SLUMP

The South African economy shrank by 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to new Gross Domestic Product numbers, released by Statistics SA on Tuesday.

This followed a contraction of 0.8% in the third quarter, which means that the economy was in recession for the last half of 2019. South Africa last entered a recession - when the GDP falls for two consecutive quarters - in the second quarter of 2018. This is South Africa's third recession since 1994.

For the whole of 2019, the South African economy grew by only 0.2% (in real terms). In 2018, it saw a growth of only 0.8%.

The fourth-quarter decline is larger than economists had predicted, as the economy battles the fallout of load shedding.

Seven out of 10 industries contracted in the fourth quarter, with agriculture (-7.6%) taking the biggest hit.

The manufacturing industry shrank 1.8% in the fourth quarter, while the transport, storage and communication industry saw a decline of 7.2%.

Stats SA reports that household spending increased by 1.4% in the final quarter of 2019, but spending on clothing and footwear was up by 8.5%.

The weak growth is likely to add more woes to President Cyril Ramaphosa's government, as the economy under his leadership continues to suffer, amid internal and external pressures.

BREAKING NEWS: NIGERIAN SUNDAY EXPLOSION KILLS NEWLY WEDDED COUPLE AND 15 OTHERS

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead and many others injured after an explosion at a gas processing plant on Sunday in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the explosion was caused by a truck that hit gas cylinders piled up at the plant in the Abule Ado area in Lagos. The gas plant is located near an oil pipeline.

The impact of the explosion damaged parts of the pipeline prompting the state oil company to halt operations of the pipeline, Reuters news agency reports.

Some 50 buildings were destroyed after a fire broke out following the explosion, according to national emergency services spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye.

A school in the neighborhood that accommodates 250 students and a Newly wedded Pregnant woman(Mrs Chisom) with her Husband was among those affected by the fire, AFP reports. Rescue workers have removed rubble from the school.

An official of the Nigerian Red Cross confirmed to the BBC’s Jessica Nwankwo that some students were injured at the school.

A nearby resident, Abibola Ayo, told AFP that he heard the blast at his house 3km (2 miles) away from the scene.

BREAKING NEWS: US-MEXICO BORDER, PREGNANT WOMAN DIES AT THE US BORDER AFTER CLIMBING THE US-MEXICO WALL

A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Guatemala died from injuries suffered after falling from the US-Mexico border wall, US and Guatemalan officials say.

Miriam Stephany Girón Luna fell as she tried to climb the steel mesh barrier near El Paso, Texas on Saturday.

She was taken to hospital where doctors tried to deliver the baby by emergency C-section without success.

Officials say the case indicates a change in how migrants are trying to reach the US amid new restrictions.

President Donald Trump has made the fight against illegal migration to the US a major policy issue and has taken measures to deter entry across the border from Mexico, including plans for a border wall. Large sections of the border near El Paso already have some form of barrier.

Girón Luna was traveling with a 26-year-old man believed to be her partner and the baby's father and fell more than 6m (19ft), Guatemala's foreign ministry said on Thursday (in Spanish). The man eventually found US border patrol agents, who called for an ambulance to rescue her.

According to the statement, Girón Luna was taken to a hospital in El Paso with a cerebral hemorrhage, liver and kidney lacerations and a pelvis fracture. She underwent multiple surgeries but died from her injuries on Tuesday.

The Guatemalan statement said she was seven months pregnant while US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said she was eight months.

Gloria Chavez, CBP's El Paso sector chief, blamed the death on "human smugglers" who had "encouraged her and helped her climb" the barrier. "We will engage our law enforcement partners in Mexico to find those responsible for placing these lives in danger," she said in a statement.

Media reports said Girón Luna was a social worker and beauty pageant winner and wanted to reach the US to help her family financially.

Tens of thousands of people from Guatemala and neighboring El Salvador and Honduras have tried to enter the US in recent years with many saying they are facing violence and poverty.

The number of Guatemalans trying to climb the US-Mexico border wall rose recently because they no longer surrender to US border patrol, Tekandi Paniagua Flores, the Guatemalan consul in Del Rio, Texas, told the Associated Press news agency.

That is because changes implemented by the US government, including the Remain in Mexico policy that forces asylum seekers from Central America to wait in Mexico until a decision on their cases is reached, have made it more difficult for many people to remain in the US once they are caught.

The man who was traveling with Girón Luna is under US custody. Guatemala's foreign ministry said it had started the process to repatriate Girón Luna's body.

CHINA SENDS ESSENTIAL CORONAVIRUS SUPPLIES TO ITALY

Credit: Chinese Expert team

China steps in to help Italy in its time of need as wealthy businessman Jack Ma offers to donate supplies to the US.

A planeload of medical supplies, including masks and respirators from China, has arrived in Italy from China to help the European country deal with its growing coronavirus crisis.

The coronavirus outbreak began in China late last year but has since swept the globe.

Italy is now the worst-affected nation in the world after China since the contagion came to light there on February 21.

The outbreak risks overwhelming Italian hospitals, and some key supplies are running low.

In contrast to China, Italy's partners in the European Union earlier this month refused Rome's requests for help with medical supplies as they looked to stockpile face masks and other equipment to help their own citizens.

A team of nine Chinese medical staff arrived late on Thursday with some 30 tonnes of equipment on a flight organized by the Red Cross Society of China.

"In this moment of great stress, of great difficulty, we are relieved to have this arrival of supplies. It is true that it will help only temporarily, but it is still important," said the head of the Italian Red Cross, Francesco Rocca.

"We have a desperate need for these masks right now. We need respirators that the Red Cross will donate to the government. This is for sure a really important donation for our country," Rocca said.

In a separate development, Chinese businessman Jack Ma, who is the founder of the Alibaba Group and among the world's richest people, offered to donate 500,000 coronavirus testing kits and one million masks to the United States, which on Friday declared a national emergency over the outbreak.

In a statement on Twitter, Jack Ma said: "Drawing from my own country's experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus."

"We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!"

Over the past weeks, Ma's organizations have helped provide similar supplies to virus-hit countries such as Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran, and Spain.

"The pandemic we face today can no longer be resolved by any individual country," Ma said. "We can't beat this virus unless we eliminate boundaries to resources and share our know-how and hard-earned lessons."
