NNPC DRIVING NIGERIA'S BIOFUEL AGENDA: NOWHERE NEAR 2020 TARGET

An oil-dependent Nigeria’s push to move away from  “the uncertainties of absolute dependence on oil” with crude being its primary source of revenue has led to renewed efforts to push for the implementation of the national biofuel policy.

hat policy is seeking to “achieve 100% domestic production of biofuels consumed in the country by 2020.”

But, there are a few problems with that.

Aside from the fact that it is 2020 and Nigeria is nowhere near meeting its target, analysts see the biofuel drive as putting pressure on the nation’s inadequate domestic food supply. With the exception of cassava, Nigeria is a net importer of food, including food feedstock based biofuels such as sugar and palm oil.

“The implementation of biofuel production in Nigeria will largely be dependent on investment of energy crop cultivation such as cassava and palm oil.  Food production in Nigeria has generally not kept pace with the population growth,” Rosemary Enemuo, an energy analyst at SBM Intelligence, tells The Africa Report.

According to her, multiple issues including outdated land legislations, poor irrigation technology, low access to credit, the high cost of farming inputs such as seedlings and fertilizers, and inadequate storage facilities have prevented Nigeria’s food self-sufficiency agenda from coming into fruition.

The backstory
In 2007, Nigeria formulated a national biofuel policy that would help the nation produce about two billion litres by 2020, helping it cut spending on ethanol imports, which at the time was costing the government about a quarter of a billion dollars a year.

Currently, Nigeria spends more than N160bn ($414.7m) a year to import ethanol for industrial use, according to Rajavelu Rajasekar, Director of Allied Atlantic Distilleries Limited (AADL). But local production only accounts for 3% of ethanol consumption in the country.

The biofuel programme would integrate the agriculture sector of the economy with the downstream petroleum sector; limit the use of fossil-based fuels for a more environmentally friendly fuel; generate additional tax revenue for the government; create new jobs and boost food production in the country.

The state oil company, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) – which has failed to run its refineries profitably – would spearhead the biofuel programme, and “engage in the commercial in-country production of biofuels in partnership with core investors,” as well as “secure 10% of NNPC Mega Station Retail Inventory and become a dominant player in Biofuels business in Nigeria,” among others.

READ MORE Nigeria VS Coronavirus: Gas could be saving grace over crashing oil

Curiously, it was only nine years after the formulation of the policy that the NNPC began shopping for investors for its renewable energy division to implement the country’s automotive biofuels industry programme through a series of planned Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

The NNPC told investors that it would indicate its negotiation shareholding of 20-30% in each of the partnerships, while the core investor(s) would be “expected to undertake 100% funding of the projects under a carry agreement in the first phase.”

A few months after, in November 2016, the Benue state governor Samuel Ortom announced that a UK-based consortium was set to contribute $340m to help build a new ethanol plant in the state, signalling a major investors’ interest in the Nigerian biofuel production.

Nowhere near target
While there have been some investments in local ethanol production in Africa’s biggest oil producer, including Africa’s largest ethanol plant in Ota, Ogun state that is producing 120,000 litres a day, the country is nowhere near meeting its target even though some signed MoUs took place with state governments for land use for ethanol plants.

An MoU signed with Kebbi state in 2018 was expected to help produce 84 million litres of ethanol a day, with about 32,000 hectares set aside for cassava production and another 15,000 hectares for sugarcane to supply the planned Nigerian National Petroleum Agency.

The project, according to the then NNPC group manager Maikanti Baru, was expected to create one million direct and indirect jobs, co-generate about 64 megawatts of bioelectricity to power the plant and light up the surrounding communities, produce refined sugar and industrial starch as well as the production of animal feeds.
Similar MoUs were signed with other states including Kogi and Ondo.
Issues with NNPC driving the policy
While the NNPC is seen moving away from its 43-year-old tradition of opacity after making public its Audited Financial Statement in June this year, analysts still believe that the state oil corporation is not the right organisation to push the biofuel agenda. This is primarily because they find the government’s “insufficient capacity to bureaucratic bottlenecks and weak accountability systems as seen with NNPC and crude oil refineries in Nigeria,” says Enemuo.

To ensure that the biofuel project delivers on its objectives, Enemuo says: “The government needs to drop its statist tendencies to economic management while making policies that will incentivise the private sector to participate in the biofuel space.”

No doubt, the NNPC has the best of hands that can handle the project successfully, says Olatunde Dondondawa, a Lagos-based independent energy sector analyst. “But bureaucracy and lack of accountability are issues of concerns.”

Another challenge also is a lack of continuity, says Dodondawa. “For instance, what happens if the present GMD is replaced today? Another GMD may not believe in the agenda and he may come with his agenda too that may negate what has already been started. Until the NNPC Act is amended and allows private investors to handle the project, things may not change,” he adds.

A case for private sector-led biofuel drive
Allowing the private sector to take the lead in driving this policy will help ease the investors’ worries on the sustainability of the project, says Dodonwa who believes the government is not sufficiently equipped to drive the project.

“As things stand, investors are reluctant to commit to such investments even as NNPC is shopping for investors in the projects. However, with a robust MOU that will guarantee firstly, repatriation of their Capital plus interest irrespective of who is at the helm of affairs, investors can commit to such projects. Besides, such risk factors will only make the cost of capital of the investment to be very very expensive.

“And you know we are in a very competitive environment, if the investors find a better alternative, I think they would settle for that. For instance, Ghana also has ethanol production potential which I consider to be a strong alternative,” he adds.

For investment in domestic production of biofuels to be private sector-driven, there needs to be a “synergy through provision of adequate credit to the private sector and formulation of incentive policies, the biofuel project is expected to see massive growth especially for locals with possibility for exportation,” says Enemuo.

“Privatising this development will allow for competitiveness, growth, and accountability, as there is immense potential for this to create huge revenue,” she adds.

Bottom line
The success of the biofuel project could translate to reduced inflation and the possibility for more revenue and creativity. But to make this happen, the government must create an environment conducive for a thriving fuel ethanol industry, just as it said in its policy document.

'THE GIRLS GO CRAZY OVER HIM': MEET JENISBEK TSERIK, MONGOLIA'S MOST ELIGIBLE EAGLE HUNTER

Jenisbek Tserik, whose name means "steel warrior," is a semi-nomadic Kazakh.
Credit:Mark Daffey

"Look over there. See that man coming this way?" asks Timur. "He's so good looking."

alloping towards us on a stout Mongolian steed is the nomad's version of Brad Pitt returning home in "Legends of the Fall." Bundled inside a pinto jacket above richly embroidered trousers, he certainly catches the eye. A fox fur hat warms his head, and perched calmly on his right forearm is a golden eagle that's not merely a prop for a cheesy cologne advertisement.
"Look at his eyebrows and his cheekbones," continues our local guide. "And look at how big and strong he is. The girls go crazy over him."
"It's true," says Timur's wife, Bata, blushing slightly. "If I was to compare him with Timur just on looks, of course I would choose him."
Upon closer inspection, the intruder's weathered face betrays a life lived outdoors. But his jaw is certainly chiseled and his natural squint reminds me of a youthful Clint Eastwood as he gazes off into the distance.

Arguably more impressive though is his stature, which I only begin to appreciate once he stands beside four other berkutchi, or eagle hunters, who have assembled in front of us for a scheduled photo shoot and interview session. He's close to a head taller, with broad, square shoulders and muscular limbs that are further exaggerated by his bulky attire.
His name is Jenisbek Tserik, an appellation that means "steel warrior" -- an apt description given his achievements. A master horseman, he's also a serial winner of tug-of-war competitions pitting two combatants wrestling a goat carcass.
So adept is Jenisbek that he has been flown to Dubai to compete in exhibition events. For a semi-nomadic Kazakh living in Mongolia's remote, westernmost province of Bayan-Ölgii, any trip abroad would be like visiting another planet. Glitzy Dubai would be a whole different universe.

LAGOS RESIDENTS CRY OUT OVER POLICIES OF SANWO-OLU, TINUBU, OBA ONIRU, ELEGUSHI

Photo Credit: Lagos Gov Sanwo-Olu, Oba Elegushi, Oba Oniru and Tinubu

Despite this, they claimed Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu and other government officials are using the period of the pandemic to further torment and strangle residents.

ome Lagos residents have accused the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of policies that have affected them negatively.

Also accused of cruel actions against residents are Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Gbolahan Lawal Oniru of Iru Kingdom, and Saheed Elegushi, Oba of Ikate-Elegushi.

According to some Lagos residents, who spoke with SaharaReporters, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the world in ways many never envisaged.

Despite this, they claimed Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu and other government officials are using the period of the pandemic to further torment and strangle residents.

“Policemen have increased extortion on many roads, land-planning groups have increased demolitions of legal properties and the government continues to create policies that benefit them to the detriment of millions.

“It started with the ban of commercial motorcycles that witnessed approximately 20,000 residents lose their means of livelihood in February 2020. It got worse with no palliatives for residents despite the significant funding the government received locally and internationally.

“Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu increased public transportation fare and many of his agencies such as LASAA have been harassing citizens for fees and taxes. In a state whereby many hundreds of businesses have shut down during the pandemic, there has been no financial break to residents but increased torment from the government,” a resident said.

Another resident accused Tinubu of publicly endorsing forceful eviction and demolition of properties in Lagos for private gains.

“Tinubu, known within the APC party as the party leader, said during a speech in August 2020 that the Supreme Court gave the planning constitution to the government of Lagos State and if they decide that all your designs and everything you are talking of real estate value is for either drainage, canal and all of that thing and they start demolishing some of it, you can do nothing.

“This blatant threat to all citizens from a master demolisher and crime king was spoken at the coronation of a king who many say was illegitimately installed by Tinubu and not legally a part of the royal family. Many allege that Gbolahan Lawal was simply a former bodyguard of Tinubu not chosen by the kingmakers nor through customary rights. In Tinubu's speech, it is evident that he has gotten away with establishing policies for his personal benefits for almost two decades.

“Millions are yet to recover from the illegal demolition and displacement of citizens from estates in Lagos such as Ajah, Otodo Gbame, Ikorodu, Elegushi and many areas across the state over the past years. Yet the torment has continued into what can be regarded as the worst year of the century for many.

“Lagos State has a motto that believes land money is oil money. Their process to wealth is to steal, displace, demolish and recycle land at the expense of millions of innocent citizens. This has gone on for two decades or more. From Lagos Mainland, to Lagos Island, to Ikoyi, Ajah and many areas across the state, citizens have lost their valued properties to government demolitions and illegal takeovers,” he said.

Recall that a resident of Ajah, Matthew Godwin, lamented recently that after his co-residents at New Era Estate struggled to gather funds to build roads and gates to secure their neighbourhood from armed robbery and other crimes, the government moved in to demolish the place without notice.

“We had hoped that our efforts will receive the commendation and support of the government but to the contrary, the government we looked up to were the ones frustrating our spirited and selfless effort to develop the estate,” he added.

OBASEKI EXTENDS HAND OF FRIENDSHIP TO IZE-IYAMU, OSHIOMHOLE AFTER WINNING EDO GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

Obaseki disclosed this on Tuesday shortly after receiving his certificate of return at the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Benin City, the Edo State capital, three days after winning the governorship election.

Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has urged his main rival in the September 19 governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress, and a former National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, to join him in moving the state forward.

Obaseki disclosed this on Tuesday shortly after receiving his certificate of return at the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Benin City, the Edo State capital, three days after winning the governorship election.

The governor was declared winner of the Saturday’s poll by INEC having met all requirements by polling 307,955 and winning 13 out of the 18 local government areas in the state.

Obaseki said, “To our friends and our brothers on the other side of the divide, we are one family in the pursuit to provide services and public good for our citizens. Our citizens have decided that as for now, they trust us more to provide them leadership. It does not mean that they do not have a role to play. It does not mean that they are not part of a family.

“I’m using this opportunity to extend the hand of fellowship to my brother, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and his other colleagues in the All Progressives Congress to join us and work with us so that we can move Edo forward.

“On a specific note, I want to use this occasion to call on the former chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, that the fight is over and he should come and join in building the house where he was part of laying the foundation.

“We have no malice, the only thing we disagreed on is the approach in moving Edo forward.”

YORUBA DIAPORA GROUP TO STAGE OODUA REPUBLIC RALLY ON OCTOBER 1 IN SIX CONTINENTS

The YOV, which has presence in 176 countries and is the umbrella body of over 300 groups of Yoruba descendants in the world, said the self-determination rally was designed to draw the attention of the world to the current situation and happenings in Nigeria.

A Nigerian group in the Diaspora, Yoruba One Voice, has said that its proposed rally for the creation of Oodua Republic slated for October 1 will take place in six continents across the world.

The YOV, which has presence in 176 countries and is the umbrella body of over 300 groups of Yoruba descendants in the world, said the self-determination rally was designed to draw the attention of the world to the current situation and happenings in Nigeria.

In a statement by YOV's Director of Communications, Comrade Zacheaus Somorin, the group said it was time for the Yoruba to exit the entity called Nigeria.

The statement reads, “The rally is to sensitise the world on the need to liberate the Yoruba race from the shackles of bondage.

“We have made our position known to our people in Nigeria. The reason for seeking self-determination as the best means and alternative is to save the nation from impending implosion.

"Nigeria has failed. The country is failing by the day. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said it recently, Prof Wole Soyinka also said it, even the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams raised the alarm several times that the country was failing.

"Similarly, the revered former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, John Onaiyekan now Archbishop Emeritus, didn't mince words recently in an interview where he said Nigeria can break up even before 2023 if we continue to be irresponsible and reckless.

"In Nigeria today, life is of no value. There is raging insecurity, electoral rigging, corruption, nepotism and cruel misgovernance. Nigerians at home are mostly affected. There is a need for us to rise against political enslavement by a section of the country. This 'forced marriage' has not been working.

"Nigeria will be 60 by October 1 and the truth is that there is nothing to show for it. Nothing except senseless killings, kidnapping, corruption, election rigging occasioned by bad leadership.

“So, we need to change the narrative. We need to fight against these lawlessness and huge misappropriation of national fortune.”

Somorin urged Yoruba indigenes to brace up to the reality of the situation on the ground, stressing that the coming event will surely change the narrative of the country.

ABIOLA'S SON SUES LAGOS POLICE COMMISSIONER OVER UNLAWFUL DETENTION, DEMAND N100M COMPENSATION

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu.

SaharaReporters recall that suspected robbers raided the Lagos mansion of the late Chief Abiola and went away with property worth millions of naira.

Two sons of late Chief Moshood Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Kassim and Aliyu, who were arrested and detained over a robbery incident that took place at their father’s residence on September 2, have approached the High Court of Lagos State in the Ikeja Judicial Division for the enforcement of their fundamental rights.

SaharaReporters recall that suspected robbers raided the Lagos mansion of the late Chief Abiola and went away with property worth millions of naira.

The robbers were said to have assessed the Toyin Street Crescent residence of the late politician through a canal and jumped over the high perimeter fence into the compound.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police disclosed that some suspects including domestic staff were arrested in connection with the incident.

But in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), the duo said they were arrested at their homes by the police in Lagos over a robbery incident that was said to have occurred inside premises they shared with many other persons.

The applicants told the court that they were discriminatorily singled out as a result of a complaint by their stepmother, Mrs Adebisi Abiola, who accused them of complicity in the robbery.

They told the court that though police had since conducted several searches at their apartments, nothing incriminating or connecting them with any alleged stolen item belonging to their stepmother was found.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police was cited as the sole respondent in the suit the applicants filed through Ozekhome.

Specifically, they prayed the court to declare that, “The arrest without warrant and subsequent and continuous dehumanization and detention of the Applicants since the 2nd September 2020, by operatives of the respondent on the alleged Complaint of one Mrs Adebisi Abiola, is illegal, unlawful, wrongful and constitutes a blatant violation of the applicants’ fundamental rights as enshrined in Section 35 (1) (4) & (6), 37, 41 (1), 44 (1) and 46(1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as altered, Sections 2, 3(1) (2), 17(1) (2), 18 (1) (2) (3), 19, 21 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, Lagos State, 2015, and Articles 5, 6 & 14 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights Ratification and Enforcement Act Cap A9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

Aside from demanding an apology, the applicants equally asked for an order to compel the respondent to pay them N100m as exemplary damages for the “wanton and grave violation” of their fundamental rights.

BREAKING: AFCON TROPHY STOLEN FROM CAF HEADQUARTERS IN EGYPT

They were informed by an employee inside the association that it was last held by former Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan.

The Africa Cup of Nations trophy has been stolen from the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo.

The Egyptian Football Federation confirmed to Goal that the trophy won by the Pharaohs three times in a row had been lost.

According to local reports, the former Egyptian Football Association, Vice President, who is also the current ONTime Sports broadcaster, Ahmed Shobir, the trophy was discovered missing during preparations to build a museum to house all the silverware won by the North African nation.

He said they were informed by an employee inside the association that it was last held by former Egypt captain, Ahmed Hassan, who refuted the claim.

“Officials of the committee which meets every five years and currently manages the Football Association were surprised that the trophy was not available, in light of their desire to create a museum at the federation headquarters, which would feature the trophy and the national team’s kits.

“However, (they) were surprised to find that the Afcon trophy was lost, and decided to open an investigation.

“The committee searched for the trophy, but then an employee told them that Ahmed Hassan, the former captain of the Egyptian national team, who won the cup three times in a row, has kept it,” Shobir said.

After learning of the trophy’s disappearance, Hassan took to social media to express his dismay at the loss.

“I wish I had kept the cup in my house instead of it being lost and I am surprised that I’m being questioned about the cup after nine years, despite the presence of two FA boards, and the five-year committee for a year and two months…but they’re only now looking for the cup,” he posted on his Twitter handle.

“The EFA started looking for some trophies with the aim of putting them in a notable museum inside the EFA.

“However, the EFA was surprised to find that the AFCON trophy was lost and decided to open an investigation.

“They were informed by an employee inside the association that it was last held by former Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan.

“Hassan however, denied the claims stating that he kept the trophy at home after winning the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2010 but returned it back to the Egyptian Football Association in 2011.

"As it stands nobody knows where the trophy is at the time being,” he said.

INCOMING INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS TO CARRY MAXIMUM OF 200 PASSENGERS ---NCAA

Each operator has only one frequency on an approved day of operation irrespective of the capacity of aircraft utilised

As Nigeria commences partial resumption of international flights, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has said that incoming flights are only permitted to carry a maximum of 200 passengers.

This was disclosed in a memo signed by Musa Nuhu, Director-General/CEO of NCAA, on Friday.

Nuhu, however, confirmed that there was no limit on the number of outgoing passengers.

“Following the announcement by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on the partial resumption of international flights effective September 5, 2020, kindly note that due to the limited number of approved incoming passengers (1,280) allowed daily per each airport, it is not possible to accommodate the requested schedule of airlines.

“The approved schedule is based on a maximum number of 200 passengers per each incoming flight to Nigeria. There is no limit on the number of outgoing passengers.

“Each operator has only one frequency on an approved day of operation irrespective of the capacity of aircraft utilised,” he said.

According to the memo, the approved airlines for international flight schedule include Turkish Airlines, Air Senegal, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar, Africa World Airlines Ghana for the Lagos and Abuja airports.

Others include Emirates, British Airways, Ethiopian, Asky, Air Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt Air, Delta, Middle East and Kenya Airways.

'RAIN OF CANNABIS': DRONE FILMED DROPPING PACKETS OF WEED ACROSS TEL AVIV

Drone belonging to a group advocating for the legalisation of marijuana dropped hundreds of bags of cannabis across Tel Aviv. (Israel Police)

In an unusual incident, residents of  Israel’s Tel Aviv claimed it was raining weed after a huge load of an illegal consignment was dropped on the city by drones. Scores of small packets containing what is suspected to be cannabis was dropped over the city’s iconic Rabin Square, leaving many confused. Onlookers were left in a frenzy once they realised what was inside.

In a statement, the Israel Police said they suspected the pouches were filled with “a dangerous drug” and that officers managed to recover dozens of them. Photos distributed by the police showed it filled with what looked like marijuana.

[embedded content]

According to Jerusalem Post, the bags were dropped by the “green drone” Telegram group, which advocates for legalisation of cannabis in the country, with “free love” being the group’s slogan. The group told followers on Telegram this was just the start of an ongoing “rain of cannabis”.

“It’s time my dear brothers. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the green drone, handing out free cannabis from the sky… Enjoy my beloved brothers, this is your pilot brother, making sure we all get some free love,” they said in their message.

Police identified two suspects who have been arrested for the dozens of bags strewn throughout the area. An investigation is underway, according to Times of Israel.

“The distribution of a suspected narcotic substance is considered as trafficking a dangerous drug in all respects and the arrested suspects will be investigated accordingly,” a police spokesperson said.

Marijuana possession is currently partially decriminalised in Israel in the case of small amounts, but distribution remains a criminal offense. According to news agency Reuters, medical use of cannabis is permitted in Israel while recreational use is illegal but largely decriminalised.

BREAKING: MAN WHO KILLED WOMEN AND HID THEM IN FREEZER GUILTY

Henriett Szucs (left) and Mihrican Mustafa were subjected to "very significant violence", the trial heard
A convicted sex offender has been found guilty of murdering two women whose bodies were found in his freezer.

The remains of Henriett Szucs and Mihrican Mustafa were discovered at Zahid Younis's flat in Canning Town, east London, in April 2019.

Prosecutors at Southwark Crown Court said Younis preyed on the vulnerable women, subjecting them to "very significant violence".

He received a life sentence, with a minimum jail term of 38 years.

How warnings about Heni and Jan's killer were missed
The four-week trial heard police made the "grim discovery" when looking for the defendant at his home following a call about his welfare.

He was not in but officers gained entry and noticed the lockable freezer, around which flies were gathering.

'Gruesome'
Ms Szucs, 32, originally from Hungary, was last seen alive in 2016 and was killed shortly before the defendant bought the freezer in November that year, the court heard.

Younis's second victim, 38-year-old Ms Mustafa, was last heard from in May 2018.

Ms Szucs and Ms Mustafa were "vulnerable women living somewhat chaotic lives", including periods of homelessness and drug addiction, the court heard.

Jurors were told Younis purchased the freezer shortly after killing Ms Szucs "for the sole purpose" of concealing her body.

Zahid Younis was in an abusive relationship with Henriett Szucs, the court heard

The nature of the crime scene meant a cause of death could not be established, but the scientific evidence showed that the women had been subjected to serious violence before their deaths.

They had both suffered numerous rib fractures while Ms Szucs had sustained "dreadful" head injuries and Ms Mustafa's sternum and larynx had been fractured.

Det Ch Insp Simon Harding said the freezer had been forced open by one of the officers on "an old-fashioned police hunch" about what was inside it.

He said: "He broke open the freezer and discovered what could only be seen, at the time, as only one body.

"It actually took the freezer being taken away and X-rayed for it to be seen there was another body underneath that. It was a gruesome discovery for the officers."

The Met's missing person inquiry into Mihrican Mustafa - which started in 2018 - did not examine vital phone evidence, which would have shown contact with Younis around the time she vanished

Det Ch Insp Harding described Ms Szucs as someone who had been in abusive relationships before and was preyed upon by Younis.

She moved in with him - although Younis denied having a long-term relationship with her - and "we have shown that she was really in love with him in her own way", the detective said.

"She wrote him letters that we found. Unfortunately to him, she did not mean anything."

The court heard that Younis has several previous convictions for assaulting partners.

A BBC investigation has identified a series of issues relating to the case:

In 2002, a teenage girl told police that Younis had attacked her with a hammer and crowbar, after falsely imprisoning her. No further action was taken.
In 2007, 26 charges against Younis relating to two young teenage girls were discontinued after a judge directed that a jury should clear him of many of the offences following evidence from one of the victims.
In 2008, a plea agreement resulted in several charges against Younis being discontinued, including rape and sexual assault.
In 2016, Ms Szucs was placed in a safe house for victims of trafficking after she was thrown from a block of flats by a man - not Younis - who was on bail for allegedly raping her. The CPS had declined to authorise a rape charge after it was first reported in February 2015. The Met Police lost contact with her as she fell under the control of Younis.
The Met's missing person inquiry into Ms Mustafa - which started in 2018 - did not examine vital phone evidence, which would have shown contact with Younis around the time she vanished. It is now the subject of an internal Scotland Yard inquiry after her family made a series of complaints.

Younis, known as "Boxer", denied murder but did admit putting the women in the freezer, pleading guilty to two counts of preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body.

He claimed he was out when Ms Szucs died at his flat and did not tell police because he was "panicking".

The jury was told he paid a man to help him get Ms Szucs' body into the freezer and that his accomplice later blackmailed him into putting Ms Mustafa's corpse in the same place.

Jurors deliberated for over 16 hours before returning majority verdicts.

Younis showed no emotion as the verdicts were read out while members of Ms Mustafa's large family, who attended every day of the three-week trial, said "yes" in the public gallery.

Her older sister, Mel Mustafa, said: "Thank you, God, thank you."

The defendant refused to return to court from the cells for sentencing, during which Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb described him as an "arch deceiver" who had "spent a lifetime destroying lives".

She added he had shown no remorse about killing "two beautiful and creative women" and he might never be released from prison.

NCAA APPROVES LAGOS, ABUJA AIRPORTS TO RESUME INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS ON SEPTEMBER 5

Other airports would be gradually reopened, stressing, however, that the two would have to adhere to existing COVID-19 protocols for approvals.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, and Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, as the two airports allowed to resume international flight operations as from September 5, 2020.

NCAA made this known in a letter with ref NCAA/DG/AIR/11/16/255 to all aviation stakeholders and foreign airlines operating in Nigeria.

The letter signed by Director-General of the NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu, stated that other airports would be gradually reopened, stressing, however, that the two would have to adhere to existing COVID-19 protocols for approvals.

The letter reads, “Other international airports namely Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano (DNKN), Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa (DNPO), and Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu (DNEN), will remain closed to international flights until a new date is determined and announced.”

Nigeria had on March 23, 2020, shut its airspace to international travel to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.

The meeting took place in the President's official office.

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Monday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, disclosed this via his verified Twitter handle.

“President ‪@MBuhari‬ receives in audience General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (‪@rccghq‬), ‪@PastorEAAdeboye‬, at the State House, Abuja,” he said.

The meeting reportedly took place in the President's official office.

Adeboye had earlier in the year joined other leaders in the country to condemn rising insecurity across Nigeria.

He led members of his church on a protest march in Lagos to register his displeasure at the situation.

Earlier this month, Christian leaders slammed President Buhari's government for introducing the Company and Allied Matters Act, which empowers a federal ministry and Corporate Affairs Commission to regulate the affairs of churches.

The topic is still a burning subject and it is believed that it could form part of Adeboye and Buhari's discussion during the cleric's visit to the Presidential Villa on Monday.

Governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, described the accident as a plot to kill the former governor.

Two policemen have died while others were left injured in a auto accident involving the convoy of former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, along the Benin bye-pass in Benin, Edo State.

SaharaReporters gathered that a truck rammed into the middle of the convoy while the former Edo State governor was going to a political rally in Usen, Ovia South-East Local Government Area.

A source close to Oshiomhole said he escaped by the whiskers.

Governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, described the accident as a plot to kill the former governor.

Iyamu in a statement also suspended all his campaign activities.

He said, “I wish to send my deepest sympathies to families, friends, and all who knew the two exceptional policemen we lost today in the tragic and disturbing crash involving the convoy of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole travelling with other leaders to a campaign event in Usen, Ovia South East LGA.

“We have since called off all campaign events scheduled for today and joined efforts with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to ensure the best care for injured persons

“The circumstances of the crash were indeed curious and have left us deeply concerned, as the truck responsible for the crash, according to witness accounts of those in the convoy and other road users, appeared to have deliberately rammed into the convoy.

“While awaiting the conclusion of the investigation of the police in response to our petition, I urge our party followers across the state to remain calm and alert. May God rest the dead, amen.”

LADY GAGA DOMINATES AT MTV AWARD

Lady Gaga cleaned up at MTV’s Video Music Awards Sunday, an unorthodox show that paid socially distanced homage to New York City as themes of voting and racial justice punctuated the night.

The 2020 VMAs — a show known more for ostentatious performances, made-for-Twitter moments and wild costumes than the actual awards — was scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic, with performances held at outdoor spaces and many celebrities accepting prizes via video.

Host Keke Palmer, known for her role in last year’s film “Hustlers,” opened the show with an emotional cold-open paying tribute to actor Chadwick Boseman, who just died after of cancer.

“We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many,” she said of the performer who portrayed James Brown and Jackie Robinson, and was the first Black superhero in “Black Panther.”

Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd — whose wins included the coveted Video of The Year — then launched into a performance of the hit “Blinding Lights” atop a viewing deck protruding off a Manhattan skyscraper, 1,000 feet in the air.

“It’s really hard for me to celebrate right now,” he said in accepting his moon man trophy for Best R&B.

“I’m just going to say justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor,” he continued, referring to recent black victims of police violence.

It was one of many nods to the Black Lives Matter movement, acknowledging a year that has seen months of anti-racism protests.

Several stars also encouraged voting during the show where the Joe Biden campaign bought a number of advertisements in a bid to reach youth in his campaign against President Donald Trump.

Lady Gaga took home trophies including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rain on Me,” her collaboration with Ariana Grande.

The pair staged a futuristic performance atop the Empire State Building, both masked, with Gaga in a BDSM-Esque corseted get-up, one of her many eccentric costumes of the night.

The 34-year-old — who famously wore a dress crafted of raw flank steak to the 2010 VMAs — also won the show’s inaugural “Tricon Award,” which recognizes an artist who is highly accomplished across three or more disciplines.

“This has not been an easy year for a lot of people, but what I see in the world is a massive triumph of courage,” she said.

“Stay safe. Speak your mind and, I might sound like a broken record, but wear a mask. It’s a sign of respect.”

– Exempt from quarantine –
The show featured sweeping pans of New York, a city devastated in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic and that originally was meant to host the VMAs at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

In addition to the Empire State Building, performances were also held at the waterfront Skyline Drive-in theatre, with an audience watching from spaced-out cars.

Performers and crew at this year’s VMAs were exempt from New York’s statewide mandatory two-week quarantine imposed on travellers coming from areas with high rates of Covid-19.

The state’s Department of Health said those involved with the show were required to quarantine when not working and submit to “rigorous testing.”

This year’s edition included new awards recognizing the tumultuous year in music, with the pandemic halting tours and festivals worldwide in a devastating blow to the industry.

The show also honoured healthcare workers with a tribute to doctors and nurses singing and dancing in crowd-sourced videos.

Grande and fellow pop star Justin Bieber won Best Music Video From Home for “Stuck With You,” while Latin boy band CNCO won Best Quarantine Performance for “Unplugged At Home.”

And while American pop regulars including Gaga, Grande and Taylor Swift all took home trophies, they were upset in their genre’s primary category by Korean megastars BTS, which won for Best Pop for “On.”

The group held a green-screen performance that placed them in front of the Brooklyn Bridge in a shot recalling the classic film “Once Upon A Time in America” that starred Robert DeNiro.

Miley Cyrus meanwhile performed “Midnight Sky” while swinging on a disco ball, recalling her “Wrecking Ball” music video.

Colombian singer Maluma won Best Latin for “Que Pena” featuring J Balvin, as R&B prodigy H.E.R. won MTV’s Video For Good, which honours work with a social message, for “I Can’t Breathe.”

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion — currently basking in the glow of her recent success with Cardi B for their raunchy hit “WAP” — won Best Hip Hop for “Savage.”

The star accepted her award from home, popping champagne wearing spandex shorts and a T-shirt.
