BREAKING: REPENTANT BOKO HARAM TERRORIST KILLS FATHER, STEAL HIS COW -Ndume

Senator Ndume Ali
Ndume also faulted the programme, saying the government should have started by rehabilitating the victims before working on the attackers.

Senator Ali Ndume has disclosed that one of the repentant Boko Haram fighters, who was reabsorbed into the community, has killed his father and absconded with his cows.

Ndume said this while speaking in an interview on ChannelsTV monitored by our correspondent.

Ndume also faulted the programme, saying the government should have started by rehabilitating the victims before working on the attackers.

He said, “Those that have been radicalised and released into the community, there is no monitoring device, and most of them that are back, I can give an example in Damboa,

“One of them only came back to kill his father and take away his cows and ran away with it.

“Some of them that returned to Damboa, after two, three days, they disappeared. I learnt reliably that even in the course of de-radicalisation, they said they are not willing to come to live with the infidels.

“This programme really needs to be looked into immediately. I am gathering information and position of my people and even go legal.”

Ndume also described the programme as “a very misplaced priority that is not supposed to happen now.”

He added that while it is okay to deradicalise, the timing was completely wrong.

“This is a situation where we still have over one million internally displaced in various camps and host communities and they are still dealing with the trauma of the insurgency and the government is doing this Operation Safe Corridor bringing in those people that tortured, killed and maimed. The memories are still fresh in our mind.

“Almost all the people are against this programme.

“Why don’t you rehabilitate, resettle the people that are dealing with the trauma and give them startup pack to start their lives in any part of the country?

“We have IDPs scattered all over the country. If the government is serious about a programme like this, it should start with the victims first, not the perpetrators,” Ndume added.

COVID-19: NIGERIAN DOCTORS GUILD REACT AS FACEBOOK, OTHERS DELETE VIDEO OF AFRICAN DOCTOR WHO MADE COVID-19 CURE CLAIMS

Immanuel in the video that has gone viral on the Internet, claimed that she had treated over 350 COVID-19 patients using hydroxychloroquine.

The Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria has reacted to the viral video of Dr Stella Immanuel on using hydroxychloroquine to cure COVID-19.

Immanuel in the video that has gone viral on the Internet, claimed that she had treated over 350 COVID-19 patients using hydroxychloroquine.

She also claimed that the drug could be used to prevent the virus.

The video has since generated a global reaction.

Taking its stand on the claim by Dr Immanuel, medical directors in Nigeria posited that her claims were unsubstantiated and should only be taken as her personal opinion.

Prof Olufemi Emmanuel Babalola, President of GMD in Nigeria, advised against the politicisation of the outbreak of the virus, urging the world to stay safe.

He said, “As we speak, a study is underway in LUTH on its efficacy and safety. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of all these studies should be undertaken to pool all the results and come up with a summative analysis which will guide clinicians.

“So, a lot of the burden in explaining the problem as related to the video naturally falls on us. Therefore, we feel it is pertinent to explain or clarify the issues for Nigerians.

“We must reiterate that Coronavirus is real and COVID-19 is an indiscriminate killer.

“We know from personal experience since it has killed many doctors and nurses all over the country, including our very own Prof. Lovett Lawson. The disease is definitely not a joke.

“This disease is definitely not a joke and we strongly condemn the politicization of the disease and the treatments currently being used to fight the pandemic.

“As at today, the whole world is still actively looking for an effective treatment and of course, a vaccine. Until then, everyone has a responsibility to remain safe and protect one another through the ways proven to help.”

Meanwhile, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are removing the videos of the press conference of Dr Immanuel from its platform.

Facebook has also taken down the profile of Dr Immanuel with, which she began sharing the video.

The video had generated over 13 million views on Facebook alone.

Facebook stated that it removed the video because of false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19.

“Hello Facebook put back my profile page and videos up or your computers with start crashing till you do. You are not bigger than God. I promise you. If my page is not back up Facebook will be down in Jesus name,” she posted on her Twitter account.

YouTube also removed the video of the press conference, replacing the footage with a message saying that the content was removed for “violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines.”

BREAKING NEWS: NIGERIA'S AIRPORT AUTHORITY PAYS STAFF HALF SALARY AFTER TOP OFFICIALS, CHILDREN STOLE OVER N750M IN FRAUDULENT CONTRACT SCHEME

Top sources at FAAN, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said senior officials and some of their children worked together to get an old contract re-awarded.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has come under fire for paying staff members half salary for July.

This is coming after top officials were accused of stealing over N750m from the organisation.

Top sources at FAAN, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said senior officials and some of their children worked together to get an old contract re-awarded.

The contract had previously been awarded to the current Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

However, the top FAAN officials led by the Deputy General Manager of Procurement, Mrs Ishola, a prime suspect in the racket, forged documents with a letterhead of the Ministry of Aviation to get the contract re-awarded and defrauded the organisation to the tune of over N750m.

Other officials involved in the racket include son of the Admin General Manager, Sodiq Musa; one Kayode; Shehu, an official at the Accounts Department, amongst others.

The fraud carried out by individuals in the Procurement Department was aided by the officials of the account and audit departments as the racket’s success will be impossible without the knowledge of the two departments.

After the fraud was detected, the FAAN set up an internal committee to investigate the officials involved.

SaharaReporters’ sources, however, revealed that although FAAN had a committee set up to investigate the crime, the same authority also covered up the result of the investigation after it was discovered that top officials were involved in the racket.

“The same people who did this are also the same guys the Ministry of Aviation use when they want to divert money through procurement,” the source said.
Minister of Aviation: Hadi Sirika

The source went ahead to reveal that FAAN secretly suspended some of the officials involved to avoid public backlash.

Staff members affected by the July pay cut disclosed to SaharaReporters how they worked throughout the lockdown period with a promise of extra allowance during the time.

They also disclosed how they’ve had to work without protective equipment to shield them from the deadly Coronavirus.

A senior management staff of FAAN revealed how the management of the organisation awarded millions of naira for feeding of staff but that the food never got round.

The staff, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said, “They said the food they gave us every day was audited at N5,000 but I’ll get more quantity and better quality for N5,00 at food joints around the airport.”

Condemning the development, aviation unions in a statement on Thursday night rejected the payment of half salary in the past month.

The statement read, “We observed with total dismay the payment of July, 2020 half salary to FAAN workers which the unions are not aware.

“This came as a rude shock to the unions because we have vehemently rejected payment of half salary in the past.

“This attitude by management is against the principle of collective negotiation as it undermines the labour law.

“By this action, we are mobilising all FAAN workers nationwide for protest starting from Wednesday 5th August, 2020. This is a red alert notice.”

NIGERIAN STUDENTS NOW BEGGARS IN UK, DABIRI-EREWA TELLS NDDC

Some of the affected students had complained that they had been suspended by their schools for non-payment of tuition and other fees.

The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission to pay the allowances, tuition and other incentives of students on its scholarship scheme in the United Kingdom.

She said the students had turned beggars following the non-payment of their tuition and allowances by the NDDC.

Some of the affected students had complained that they had been suspended by their schools for non-payment of tuition and other fees.

But Dabiri-Erewa in a statement on Tuesday by Mr Gabriel Odu of the NiDCOM Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, referred to a letter written to the Minister of the Niger Delta, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, dated June 18, 2020, drawing attention to the plight of the students, and urging the NDDC to pay them.

The statement read, “At the moment, there have been persistent calls by the students for urgent intervention.

“While the deadline for payment of the fees of some of the students has expired or about to expire, non-payment of their allowances has virtually turned many of them to beggars.”

BREAKING: WE USED N1.5BN TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES AS COVID-19 PALLIATIVE, SAYS NDDC MD, PONDEI

Kemebradikumo Pondei

Pondei disclosed this at the investigative hearing on the N40bn corruption allegation against the commission.

The sum of N1.5bn was used as COVID-19 relief fund for staff of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Kemebradikumo Pondei, Acting Managing Director of the commission, said.

Pondei disclosed this at the investigative hearing on the N40bn corruption allegation against the commission.

The Senate had on May 5 set up a seven-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the financial recklessness of the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC.

The MD and other delegates from the commission appeared before the committee on Thursday for the hearing.

The lawmakers raised concerns over the spending at the NDDC, noting that the commission spent N40bn last three months without due process.

However, Pondei when giving account of how money was spent, said staff of the agency had to be catered for, too.

He said, “We used it (N1.5bn) to take care of ourselves. We are NDDC, we need to take care of ourselves too.”

Part of the audit report read out by the Chairman of the committee, Olubunmi Adetunmbi, said N3.1bn was spent as COVID-19 funds between October 2019 and May 2020.

In the report, the lawmaker said, "N10m was paid to one person, N7m to two people, N5m to three people, 148 people took N3m each, 157 people got N1.5m each, 497 people got N1m each and 464 people were paid N600,000 each.”

Another N475m was given to the police to purchase face masks and hand sanitisers, he added.

BREAKING: I DID'T COLLECT N4BN FROM MAGU - OSINBAJO

Vice President Osinbajo
The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, on Wednesday, said there was no truth in some reports claiming that Magu told the presidential panel probing him that he gave Osinbajo N4bn after the vice president asked him to release part of the recovered loot.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has denied receiving N4bn from the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Akande, in a statement made available to journalists, described the report as false and baseless.

He wrote, “With all emphasis at our disposal, let it be firmly stated that these are false and baseless fabrications purporting to reflect goings-on at the probe panel investigating Mr Ibrahim Magu. They are indeed completely absurd in every respect.

“Sadly, such mindless, vicious and reckless publications have now become the preferred tool of unscrupulous and reprobate elements in our society who are procured with monetary inducement to peddle blatant falsehood, tarnish the image of upright public officials and mislead unsuspecting Nigerians.”

Akande said Osinbajo would not be distracted by the campaigns of lies and calumny. He said the online publications, being criminally defamatory, have been referred to the relevant law enforcement agencies for investigation and necessary action.

UNITED STATES TOPS THREE MILLION COVID-19 CASES, TRUMP PUSHES FOR SCHOOLS TO REOPEN

President Donald Trump
The coronavirus is surging in several southern hotspots of the nation, including Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Arizona, while it has almost entirely receded from its former epicentre in New York and the north-east.

The United States on Wednesday passed another grim COVID-19 milestone with three million confirmed cases, as President Donald Trump aggressively pushed for schools to reopen.

The coronavirus is surging in several southern hotspots of the nation, including Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Arizona, while it has almost entirely receded from its former epicentre in New York and the north-east.

Johns Hopkins University put the total of confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 3,009,611, in its real-time tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

“At this point, we have tested more than 39 million Americans,” US Vice President Mike Pence told reporters.

“Among those, more than three million Americans have tested positive and more than 1.3 million Americans have recovered.”

Trump embarked on a morning tweetstorm ahead of a public meeting of his coronavirus task force, in which he called for students to return to their schools in fall and lashed out at his top health agency. “In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and many other countries, schools are open with no problems,” he said.

“The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November election, but is important for the children and families. May cut off funding if not open!”

He added that he disagreed with guidance for reopening schools set out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and would be “meeting with them!!!”

BREAKING: AUCTION OF 'STOLEN' NIGERIAN TREASURES GOES AHEAD IN PARIS

Christie's proceeds with the sale of artifacts, says the transaction lawful given that objects were sold at past auctions.

Auction house Christie's has gone ahead with a sale of statues which Nigerian museum officials said were stolen during the country's civil war in the 1960s.

Nigeria's National Commission for Museums and Monuments had demanded Christie's stop the sale of the artifacts, which were collected by an art dealer and adviser of the late French President Jacques Chirac.

But at Monday's auction in Paris, the pair of "museum quality" Igbo statues were sold for 212,500 euros ($239,000). Meanwhile, a "major Urhobo statue" estimated at 900,000 euros ($1m) failed to sell.

The three pieces from southern Nigeria were among a number of "African masterpieces" that Christie's said came from an "important European private collection" they declined to name.

However, the head of the National Museum in Nigeria's Benin City had said the objects were stolen during the Biafran war that raged in the late 1960s and appealed to Christie's "and other auction houses to halt the process immediately".

"They have to repatriate such works and pay compensation to us in the interest of natural justice," Theophilus Umogbai said.

Chika Okeke-Agulu, a Princeton scholar who also raised alarm earlier this month that the objects were looted, said the pieces are "an important part of Nigeria's art and cultural heritage".

"Nations and societies value the examples of the great art and cultures of their ancestors," he told Al Jazeera.

"So to have this set of objects that were stolen from eastern Nigeria during the civil war up for sale when we should be discussing the terms of their return because they were illegally taken out of Nigeria, that's why I started the call for repatriation."

Okeke-Agulu said the objects were taken through "an act of violence" and should not be sold. An online petition with the hashtags #BlackArtsMatter and #MyHeritageMatters collected more than 3,000 signatures demanding the auction be halted.

Christie's refused to stop the sale, saying the objects had been previously sold at a major international art fair.

In a statement to the Associated Press news agency, the auction house said: "These objects are being lawfully sold having been publicly exhibited and previously sold over the last decades prior to Christie's involvement."

While Christie's said it recognised the "nuanced and complex debates around cultural property", it said public sales of objects like these should go-ahead to stop the black market flourishing.

It said there was "verifiable documented provenance" that the objects were taken out of Nigeria before 2000, as the law required.

Christie's said the objects were most likely traded by local agents before being sold to Jacques Kerchache, the French art dealer, in Cameroon or in Paris.

"We believe that this type of statue would not have been sold without the agreement of local chiefs/leaders."

But Mallam Abdu Aliyu, of Nigeria's museum's commission, said they were convinced the objects were taken illegally.

"For years, we have clamoured for the repatriation of these works to no avail. We have been negotiating through dialogue and diplomacy to have these works brought back to their original owners," he told AFP news agency.

"We have written a letter of protest to Christie's ... and are going to engage Christie's and museums in the UK, Germany and other nations where our artefacts had been allegedly taken."

The repatriation of artworks and religious objects looted by European powers during the colonial era has become a political hot potato, with several African and Asian nations demanding the return of treasures.

French President Emmanuel Macron caused an earthquake in the museum world in 2019 by ordering the return of 26 treasures to Benin, which borders Nigeria.

A report he commissioned also recommended the return of objects removed without consent during the colonial period if their countries of origin asked for them.

MADAGASCAR REIMPOSES LOCKDOWN IN CAPITAL AS CORONAVIRUS CASES SURGE

A member of the National Defense Force stands at a checkpoint as part of measures put in place to combat the spread of coronavirus in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in March.

Madagascar has reimposed a lockdown in its central region, which includes its capital Antananarivo, in an effort to tackle an increase in coronavirus cases in the city, according to the country's government.

Schools and universities in the city have been closed and nonessential travel within the region is prohibited until July 20.
Authorities say churches will be shut, and public gatherings of more than 50 people have been banned.

The government said troops have been deployed to affected districts to ensure residents comply with containment measures, including a curfew in the capital city, the government said.

The decision came after the island nation, with around 27 million people recorded 209 new cases in the capital Saturday bringing the total number to 2,941 coronavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization.

More than 25,000 tests have been carried out, according to the country's health ministry.
President Andry Rajoelina sent a contingent of doctors and troops to its second-largest city, Toamasina, to combat the virus outbreak after two people died of coronavirus and bodies were reportedly found in the city's streets in May.

The government had initially locked down the country's two largest cities -- Antananarivo and Toamasina as the virus spread in March.
Rajoelina lifted the restrictions four weeks later and began promoting a herbal tonic made in the country, claiming it could prevent coronavirus and cure it though it had not undergone any international clinical trial.

The tonic's distribution across the country and to some other governments in Africa sparked controversy and several warnings by the WHO and other experts, who said its efficacy against the virus was unproven.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY, MIT DRAGS US GOVERNMENT TO COURT OVER PLANNED DEPORTATION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The institutions said the July 6 directive didn’t offer any reasoned basis that could justify the policy and violated the Administrative Procedure Act’s requirement of notice-and-comment rulemaking.

Following the announcement by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement that it might deport foreign students taking online courses in US universities due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have sued the US government.

ICE warned that students with specific visa types may not take a full online course load and remain in the country, adding that visas won’t be issued to those enrolled in fully online courses.

The court papers read, “Immediately after the Fourth of July weekend, ICE threw Harvard and MIT—indeed, virtually all of higher education in the United States—into chaos.

“On July 6, ICE announced it was rescinding its COVID-19 exemption for international students, requiring those on F-1 visas whose curricula are entirely online to depart the country.

“It also barred any such students currently outside the United States from entering or reentering the United States.

“ICE also purported to require schools whose classes would be entirely online to submit an operational change plan no later than July 15, 2020—nine days after the change was announced.

“It said universities that have adopted a hybrid model—a mixture of online and in-person classes—will have to certify for each student on an F1 visa that the program is not entirely online and that the student isn’t taking an entirely online course load for fall 2020 and that the student is taking the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program.”

The institutions said the July 6 directive didn’t offer any reasoned basis that could justify the policy and violated the Administrative Procedure Act’s requirement of notice-and-comment rulemaking.

“The order came down without notice — its cruelty surpassed only by its recklessness,” Lawrence S. Bacow, Harvard’s President, was quoted to have said in a message to the university community.

“It appears that it was designed purposefully to place pressure on colleges and universities to open their on-campus classrooms for in-person instruction this fall, without regard to health and safety,” he added.

EXCLUSIVE: $1.3M UNITED STATES MANSION PURCHASED BY EX-OYO GOVERNOR, AJIMOBI, IN 2016 UNCOVERED

It was also gathered from sources at the Code of Conduct Bureau that the property was not listed among assets declared by the former Oyo governor until his tenure in office elapsed in 2019.

A house in Rockville, Maryland, United States, purchased by a former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, in 2016 for $1,347,200m -- N522,713,600m (N388 per USD) -- has been uncovered.

The residential building located at 10821 Symphony Park Drive, which attracts an annual tax of $18,198 -- N7,060,824m --was purchased by Ajimobi during his second term in office as governor of the state in 2016.

According to findings by SaharaReporters, the purchase of the house in America is in gross violation of the code of conduct laws of Nigeria, which forbids serving public officials from operating bank accounts and purchasing a property outside the country.

It was also gathered from sources at the Code of Conduct Bureau that the property was not listed among assets declared by the former Oyo governor until his tenure in office elapsed in 2019.

Also, checks with top real estate players in the US indicated that the Maryland property of Ajimobi was now worth at least $1.6m -- N620,800,000m.

The revelation comes days after Ajimobi died at the First Cardiology Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, as a result of Coronavirus complications.

Before his demise, the late former governor had been embroiled in a bitter feud with the Oyo State Government headed by Seyi Makinde over the revocation of 48 plots of land belonging to him.

According to the state government, the revocation became necessary after the property violated its land administration laws.

Unwilling to lose the choice property without putting up a brave fight, Ajimobi took the matter to court where it remained until he died last week.
