GHANA'S EX-FOOTBALL CHIEF CHARGED WITH FRAUD;

Ghana’s former football chief Kwesi Nyantakyi has been charged with fraud at a high court in the capital, Accra.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges that arose from an undercover investigation for the BBC in 2018 which sought to expose corruption in African football.

Mr. Nyantakyi was filmed taking $65,000 (£48,000) from an undercover reporter.

He was also accused of requesting $12m to influence the award of contracts from the sponsor in Ghana.

Following the documentary, called Betraying the Game, he resigned from his posts within Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

But the former Ghana Football Association president dismissed the investigation at the time as "shoddy work with cut and paste".

He appeared in court on Wednesday with a young football administrator, Abdulai Alhassan, who also denied allegations of fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud and corruption by a public officer.

Both men have been granted bail of 1m Ghanaian cedis ($184,000, £143,000) and are required to report to the police’s Criminal Investigation Department every Friday until the next hearing on 25 March.

These are the first charges to arise out of the investigation by Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which was broadcast by BBC Africa Eye.

BREAKING: OSHIOMOLE REACTS TO REMOVAL AS APC CHAIRMAN, FILES APPEAL;

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has filed an appeal against a court ruling removing him as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Oshiomhole was removed as the party’s chair after an FCT High Court in Jabi suspended Adams Oshiomhole as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier on Wednesday.

Justice Danlami Senchi ordered Oshiomhole to stop parading himself as the chairman of the party pending the determination of the substantive suit, which is seeking his perpetual removal as the APC chairman.

British lorry driver 'is arrested in Morocco for trying to smuggle 100,000 face masks worth £2.6million out of the country'

A British lorry driver has been arrested in Morocco after trying to smuggle 100,000 face masks worth £2.6 million out of the country, reports suggest.

The trucker was held in the Port of Tanger Med, a cargo port located about 25 miles east of the Moroccan city of Tangier, according to local reports.

The unnamed driver was planning to take the face masks back to the UK so he could sell them for 30 euros, or £26, each following shortages and price hikes caused by coronavirus fears, local media reports.

He was yesterday arrested by customs officers, website le360. ma stated, and is currently believed to be in police custody, although there has been no official comment from the authorities, 

On Monday, a Moroccan man living in Italy who is currently at a hospital in Casablanca became the first case of coronavirus in the country.

Investigations are underway at several hospitals across Spain following the theft of thousands of face masks after price hikes and shortages caused by the deadly outbreak.

Regional health chiefs are probing the theft of 5,000 face masks from Valladolid University Clinic Hospital in the latest incidents to emerge.

Around 250 boxes containing 20 face masks, each is said to have vanished from different operating theatres and hospital floors, prompting speculation the thefts are an 'inside job' perpetrated by staff.

The latest incident comes on the back of news a doctor at a Costa del Sol hospital faces disciplinary proceedings after allegedly being caught trying to take 300 face masks from a storeroom.

A spokesman for the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in Malaga confirmed an internal probe had been launched.

The unnamed medic, described as a trauma doctor, reportedly claimed when he was intercepted that he wanted to make the face masks to the village where he lived and hand them round to worried friends and neighbors.

TOGO PRESIDENT CELEBRATES COURT AFFIRMATION OF HIS FOURTH TERM IN OFFICE

Togo’s Constitutional Court on Monday affirmed the outcome of the February 22 presidential vote that saw incumbent Faure Gnassingbe secure re-election, his fourth consecutive victory.

Reacting on social media after the declaration, the 57-year-old president said the court had affirmed what was a clean, fair and transparent process. He reiterated calls on opponents to join in nation-building efforts.

“The proclamation of the final results of the presidential election today by the constitutional court marks the culmination of a democratic, free, inclusive and transparent electoral process.

“Beyond the expression of my gratitude for the renewed confidence, I would like to tell you my admiration for the political and democratic maturity which you have massively shown,” his post read in part.

Two days after the vote, the elections body, CENI, declared Faure winner with 72% of valid votes cast. The declaration came amidst an opposition victory claim with other aspirants congratulating a former Prime Minister for “unseating” the president.

“Based on all the data obtained from the local independent electoral commission and the independent embassy electoral commissions, the candidate of the Union for the Republic (UNIR) party, Mr. Gnassingbé Essozimna Faure is provisionally proclaimed elected president of the Togolese Republic”, Kodjona Kandaga, President of the National Electoral Commission said at the time.

The CENI said ex-Prime Minister, Agbeyome Kodjo, came in second with just 18 percent of votes on Saturday. Kodjo who claimed victory hours after polls closed denounced vote irregularities in the capital, Lome.

The court declaration is the final leg of the poll process. A victory for the 53-year-old was widely expected. It extends the dynasty of the Gnassingbé family over the former French colony.

Faure has led the country of 8 million people since he took over in 2005. He rose to power following the death of his father, Gnassingbé Eyadema, who ruled the West African nation for 38 years.

MIKE TYSON CRIES AS HE REVEALS HE FEELS 'EMPTY' AFTER RETIRING FROM BOXING

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson broke down in tears during a recent episode of his podcast featuring Sugar Ray Leonard, saying he feels "empty."

During the episode of "Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson," he told Leonard, "I know the art of fighting, I know the art of war. That's all I’ve ever studied. That's why I’m so feared, that's why they feared me when I was in the ring. I was an annihilator, that’s all I was born for."

"Now those days are gone. It's empty, I’m nothing," Tyson, 53, said.

He said he is working on "the art of humbleness."

"That’s the reason why I’m crying, 'cause I’m not that person no more. And I miss him."

Tyson, who was disqualified from a fight in 1997 after he bit a chunk out of Evander Holyfield's right ear, said he is fearful of his old self.

"'Cause sometimes I feel like a b----," he said on his podcast. "Because I don't want that person to come out 'cause if he comes out, hell is coming with him."

"And it's not funny at all," he said. "It's not cool, like, I'm a tough guy. It's just that I hate that guy. I'm scared of him."

Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and served three years in prison. He retired from boxing in 2005.

LUXEMBOURG BECOMES THE FIRST COUNTRY TO MAKE ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FREE.

Luxembourg has become the first country in the world to introduce a free-for-all public transport system. As of Saturday 29 February, passengers can ride trains, trams, and buses for free in a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion. The policy will affect around 40% of households and will cost the Treasury €41m a year in revenue. People will still have to purchase a ticket if they want to travel first-class on trains or make use of certain night bus services.
